Climate Change Debate

Company
Recently, the New Dawn Community Based Organization (CBO), in partnership with the Kilifi County Government Kilifi Department of Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry, hosted an inaugural youth climate change debate at the Mariakani Grounds Social Hall.
Over 100 high school students came together to engage with climate experts, discussing crucial climate issues affecting education and our local communities. The event perfectly aligned with H.E. Governor Gideon Maitha Mung’aro’s manifesto for youth, talent, and innovation, emphasizing the importance of empowering our youth in addressing climate challenges.
The debate focused on increasing awareness among youth about climate change, its causes, and impacts on our communities. The youth delved into pressing climate change issues like ongoing floods that have displaced thousands and closed down over 60 schools nationwide. Besides activities like essay writing sessions, oral questions, and a panel discussion on the pivotal role of youth in climate action.
Our Acting Director for Climate Change and Forestry, Mr. Anthony Kanundu, led an eye-opening awareness session, shedding light on climate change and its interconnectedness with various issues, including the community’s role in climate effects such as deforestation, improper waste management, unsustainable agricultural practices, and plastic waste pollution. This helped the youth understand that our actions are exacerbating the climate crisis.
The climax of the event was the awarding of certificates to winners and their encouragement to implement their innovative ideas in combating the climate crisis in their communities. As we echo Governor Mungaro’s vision of empowering our youth in climate action, the department leadership is steadfast in promoting sustainable job creation for youth through climate innovations that will, in return, spur economic growth and education awareness. Together, we’re taking meaningful steps towards a greener, more sustainable future.
