Sabaki Primary School is an esteemed public educational institution located in Sabaki ward,Magarini subcounty , Kilifi County, Kenya. Established in 1963, it has thrived for six decades, producing outstanding students who have excelled nationally. However, the adverse effects of climate change resulted to extreme soil erosion particularly from the overflow of the Sabaki River, pose a serious threat to the school’s 60-year legacy. Soil erosion and landslides have continually and gradually been eroding the school’s infrastructure, with classrooms now perilously close to the edge of landslides due to deforestation leaving the soil vulnerable.
As the County Department of Environment, Climate Change & Forestry we have conducted a comprehensive analysis of the situation and have outlined plans to reclaim the school landscape and it’s environment. Our strategy includes harvesting rain water from all the buildings within the school, construction of gabions along the eroding soil to prevent further erosion, as well as initiatives to empower the households around the school landscape to control soil erosion in the surrounding area. Additionally, we are working closely with the Sabaki ward climate change planning committee to identify some of these priority areas for climate change mitigation that require urgent attention.
