The Kilifi County Government Department of Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry, in partnership with Botanic Gardens Conservation International (KAYA Connect), successfully hosted a two-day stakeholder engagement forum focused on reviewing and implementing forestry management policies. The forum emphasized the urgent need for better enforcement of existing regulations, development of new policies as necessary, and collaboration with stakeholders for sustainable practices.
Community-based organization representatives emphasized the crucial role of community engagement in successful forestry resource management. This includes promoting community-based approaches, increasing awareness about the importance of forests, and integrating traditional knowledge with modern practices.
The department, through the leadership of HE Governor Gideon Maitha Mung’aro is committed to addressing gaps in the 2016 Kilifi County Forest Policy while implementing the 2019 Forest Conservation and Management Act. This involves engaging all stakeholders and ensuring the completion of necessary actions to enhance forest conservation efforts.
The forum was attended by CECM Hon. Omar Said Omar, Chief Officer of Environment, Climate change and forestry Ms. Zamzam Ali, Environment Director Jimmy Kahindi, and Climate Change and Forestry Ag Director Mr. Kanundu Ngumbao.
Other stakeholders included KEFRI, KFS, NMK, Pwani University, CGK Department of Environment, Devolution and community group representatives.
