Worlds Earth Day

Company
Marking todays Worlds Earth Day with the theme “Planet vs Plastic”, the Department of Environment under the leadership of Chief Officer Zamzam Ali and Director Jimmy Yaa, teamed up with environmental champions including Malindi environmental youth initiatives, Malindi residents’ development group, Kenya association of hoteliers, National government representatives NEMA, KWS and WWF-Kenya in launching Eco World Recycling Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Malindi.
The new Eco World MRF in Malindi will create job opportunities for waste collectors and will empower women and youth to be the drivers of a vibrant Plastics Circular Economy. Approximately over 400 tons of plastic will be diverted from the environment, while creating job opportunities for over 1,000 women and youth thus a win-win benefits for coastal communities and our environment.
Through a strategic collaboration with the department of Environment, Eco World is aiming to boost plastic collection and recycling efforts in the County hence reduce the impact of plastic pollution in our coastal ocean and environment.
The department on its part is in the processes of Amending the Kilifi County Solid Waste Management Act 2019, to ensure its aligned to the Sustainable Solid Waste Management Act 2022; incorporating Circular economy, establishment of MRFs and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) in the Act.
This is also aligned with Governor Gideon Mungaro commitment to providing a clean and health environment for residence of Kilifi County.
